Is it okay to post Advanced Reader's Copies? I know on PBS it's definitely called out as a no-no.

I've seen a bunch on here lately, listed under the hardcover ISBN (for two points Eeker) with that in the description line.

Is there a reason not to post them here? I for one would be greatly interested! Do you have any C.J.Box. or Rita Mae Brown? I hope you have some! Big Grin

Yes, they allow ARCs here but if I've had one I put in CAPS..... NOT A HARDCOVER - THIS IS.. etc.

No surprises.

I suppose if the book isn't out yet someone might want to grab it for 2 pts (personal choice) but seems once it is released .. why pay 2 if you can get the final copy HC for that?

I´ve seen one of those copies. It was for a book which will be available in June. 5 points.
I would be really crazy if I couldn´t wait one more month to get a clean, new copy. Roll Eyes

You're right, a clean copy is more desirable, but if the ARC is the only copy listed, what are you going to do. You might order the ARC.

I am not crazy about people openly trading ARCs. It is sort of a gray area, they certainly are not bootlegs or illegal or anything. But the original recipient was given the book on the understanding that they would not trade, resell, give away, etc. the book.

So if you are offering an ARC, you are not offering stolen goods or even close to it. But it is kind of a distant cousin to doing that.

I am not criticizing anyone for doing it, just offering my 10 cents on the subject. I don't even object to doing it, really. My wife, the librarian has a very different view on the subject, would say that it is something that should not be done, but I am more agnostic. It's just that I think it is the kind of thing is best done illicitly, in a dark alley, rather than right out in the open.

Actually... believe it or not moment- almost all the ARCs I've gotten have been .20 (because they count as paperbacks) and were purchased from the library from the permanant for-sale shelf. (girl scount's honor) I suppose they were donated probably by the person who did a book review for publisher in return.

I won't post mine. I think I agreed to something like this when I started getting them.

Just thought it was strange to see them here when other sites are so against it.

I figure the reviewers must have to agree to certain terms when they agree to accept them in return for their review services, much the same with movie reviewers do, but I am not aware of what the exact agreement is. Can only speculate.

I guess that´s up to the publisher.
I know in Germany I had to sign a confidentiality of content agreement which was ok from my side because the writer was very well know.
I also remember that there were certain books were no signature was required.

I wasn't sure if they were allowed here either. Nice to know they are. Smiler
I've ran across a couple at second hand stores. But didn't realize that's what they were until I got home...so I've ended up sending them back.

At least I can do something with them Smiler

I have a friend in publishing who has just started giving me ARCs since they would otherwise be tossed in the trash. (What a waste!) I love them. They are so much more luxurious than the mass market paperback size. They are printed in the size the size of hardbacks or trade paperbacks, without the extra weight.

Yes, I will be listing them here after I'm done reading them. Smiler The will be well described as ADVANCE READING COPIES.

I don't know why PBS has a problem with posting them. They say it's because ARCs might not contain exactly the same contents as the final book. Well, unless you're in a book club need ing the same edition, or a thread talking about Harry Potter, or a popular book like that, where people will be quoting from exact pages, quotes & passages, the books aren't going to contain that much different stuff. Roll Eyes It's not like, in the uncorrected proof of a mystery, the butler did it, but in the final published copy, the author changes it at the last minute to the hero's best friend. Roll Eyes
